I’m back! From the dead, or so it has seemed. My last post was over two years ago. Since then, my life had been rudely interrupted by a pandemic, hip replacement surgery, and a hurricane from hell! To find my way out of the dark, and back into the light, I realized I needed some source of light. That light eventually came in the form of a 1970 VW Westfalia
(campervan). The poor thing was in a state of long-term neglect. Before it could be restored to health, it first needed rescue. I bought it and named “him” Kaspar.
Kaspar became the inspiration to get my sorry, crippled ass out of bed each day and work that new hip. My activity level shot up sky high. Kaspar soon became my preferred place to sit and write – something I had ceased for far too long. I restored. I kicked back within Kaspar sipping my morning coffee waiting for inspiration to strike. While waiting, I had an epiphany. Kaspar and I were to become beach buddies, as soon as we were both in better health.
Throughout my life, the beach has been a place of re-energization. The vastness of the sea, the expansiveness of the shoreline, the sound of sea birds and, of pounding surf, and the smell of seaweed-infused salty air, was just the right prescription for instilling a deep sense of calm, lifting my spirit, and revitalizing my soul. This re-awakening fostered a wave of inspiration. I had procrastinated putting together a book of poems for nearly three years. Once fully back into the light, Blue Sea Glass and Other Rare Finds also emerged.
It became clear from the outset; this book was to be more than a simple collection of poems. Like ocean waves, nostalgia and personal reflection swept over me. Somewhat autobiographical, it became public testimony to the important role beaches have played in my life from early childhood to this day. I invite readers to walk along with me as together we search for treasures in the sand. In this work I not only share more than a hundred poems, I also reveal snippets of my personal history and intimate thoughts.
It feels good to be back!
